4 Rules to Cycle Safely
Make a checklist. Before you leave the house, ask yourself: Are the tires inflated enough? Do the brakes work? Is the chain running smoothly? Am I bringing tools and supplies to fix a flat? Do I have my helmet? Got cash in case I need to call a cab? Am I carrying ID?
Follow the rules of the road.Ride with traffic, obey traffic signals and stop signs, give way to pedestrians, and stay off sidewalks.
Stand out.Cyclists need to be seen, so it's important to wear bright clothing and to use a white front light, red rear light, and reflectors when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with others, especially drivers.
Be a mind reader.Think like the drivers and other cyclists around you. Watch for signs that they're going to turn, reverse, cross in front of you, and so forth. Parked cars can be the worst: Just when you think you're in the clear, a door swings open and bam! Put enough space between you and those cars so they can't take you out.
